When choosing steel for your project, it’s important to understand the differences between raw steel, and etched steel—each serves a unique purpose.

• Raw Steel: This steel retains slag from the cutting process and the mill scale layer from manufacturing. It tends to rust more slowly due to these surface layers. It’s a good choice for projects where surface appearance isn’t critical right away, or when you plan to handle preparation yourself.

• Etched Steel: Through an etching process, both slag and mill scale are removed, resulting in a cleaner surface that rusts more quickly and evenly. This finish is ideal for painting, powder coating, or creating a consistent rust patina.

Both the Raw Steel and the Etched Steel options are shipped without rust prevention and may experience additional rusting during transit. Choosing the right finish depends on your project goals and how much preparation or waiting time you’re willing to invest.
